New Delhi, October 06, 2023 :  The first cheese factory in Greece with vertically integrated use of liquid waste  Sustainable development and operation of the production units constitute a strategic priority for EPIRUS SA. EPIROS factory in Domokos, where the popular Katiki Domokou is produced, was designed with the aim of reducing the use of energy and natural resources, such as water, through circular use.

It is the first cheese-production unit in Greece that has succeeded in using 100% of the liquid waste that comes from the biological cleaning unit, to irrigate an area of 5.000 sq.m., through an underground system that returns clean water to the groundwater zone.

In addition, at the EPIROS factory in Domokos, 200 Paulownia trees, a species that was chosen after thorough study, have been planted for its high carbon dioxide sequestration index, in an area of 5.000 sq.m. Specifically, over the course of a decade (with an average life expectance of the trees to be around 7-10 years), the sequestration of carbon dioxide by trees is estimated to be around 55 tons. The implementation of the second phase of the tree planting of an additional three acres is underway, with the aim of covering additional needs created by the increase in the production capacity of the unit.

Apart from their ability to sequester CO², Paulownia trees are abundant in flowers, in a way that contributes significantly to beekeeping, while the wood is considered to be of excellent quality and hard to find.

The plant has also undergone a radical waste reduction process, with the waste being now used for the production of green energy, through cooperation with biogas production companies, instead of polluting landfill sites.

As Plant Manager of the EPIROS factory in Domokos, Stelios Mpasiouras, mentioned, “This investment is a small step towards the direction of achieving a net zero carbon footprint. We certainly have a lot more to do, not only as a company but also as an industry in general. But we are of course very proud for being able to combine innovative and smart practices that contribute to confronting environmental challenges“.

It is remarkable that EPIROS factory in Domokos implements an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System by TUV Hellas, taking under consideration all the updated criteria for minimizing the impact of factory activities on the natural environment.
