Panaji, January 06, 2025: Nutri-hormonal therapy developed by the ICAR-CCARI Goa is offering a solution to one of the most persistent challenges faced by dairy farmers—repeat breeding in crossbred cows.
The innovative therapy, a combination of bypass fat and hormonal treatment, has shown extraordinary success in improving conception rates and reproductive performance in dairy cattle. The breakthrough was highlighted at the recently held field day in Mayem, Bicholim, an event that gathered farmers, experts, and officials to discuss the impact of this new protocol.
Speaking to a group of 24 local farmers, as well as officials from the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services, subject matter specialist in animal science and head of KVK, North Goa, Udharwar S V, stressed on the importance of this therapy in improving the reproductive health of dairy cattle. He shared how the nutri-hormonal protocol had successfully addressed repeat breeding issues in cows that had previously failed to conceive after multiple breeding attempts.
“There was remarkable success in three cows that had previously failed to conceive after 4 to 5 breeding attempts. Not only did these cows become pregnant, but they also successfully delivered healthy calves,” he said.
At the field day, Senior Scientist in Animal Reproduction at ICAR-CCARI Goa, Gokuldas PP elaborated on the scientific aspects of the therapy. His expert lecture delved into the role of hormones such as gonadotropins, sex hormones, and prostaglandins, which regulate the oestrous cycle and influence reproductive efficiency in dairy cows. He also discussed the importance of hormonal therapies and assisted reproductive technologies in boosting conception rates and enhancing the reproductive health of crossbred dairy animals.
