New Delhi, March 08, 2019: Previously a former dairy processor just outside of New York City, Elmhurst Dairy LLC changed its name to Elmhurst 1925 when the company made the switch to producing plant-based beverages in 2017.
Seeing a decline in dairy consumption and a change in the American diet, Elmhurst CEO Henry Schwartz made the decision to change the family business by rebranding from Elmhurst Dairy to Elmhurst 1925 and going all vegan.
Now exclusively dairy-free, the company has also started to produce hemp “creamer” made from the seeds of the cannabis plant.
Containing only miniscule amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the dairy alternative will not give consumers the psychotropic “high” typically associated with the cannabis plant. Most hemp beverage producers guarantee their plants to have 0% THC. However plants with a 0.3% or less THC are sometimes used according to dairyherd.com.
In an interview with FoodBev Media, Peter Truby, vice president of marketing at Elmhurst, said, “Elmhurst 1925 is passionate about leading the plant-based milk category with on-trend innovation, and given the explosive growth of the hemp category, we’re excited to announce the industry’s first hemp creamer.”
Besides hemp “creamer,” Elmhurst 1925 also has a number of nut-based beverages, including ones made from cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and peanuts. The company also sells grain-based drinks containing oats and brown rice.
As plant-based beverage and cannabis trends continue to grow, dairy producers may begin to see more hemp-based products hitting store shelves in the near future.
